In
Luke 19:41-43 it says, “As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he
wept over it and said, ‘If you, even you, had only known on this day
what would bring you peace―but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days
will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against
you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.’" Jesus wept over the
city of Jerusalem, because He knew the trouble and pain that would be
coming upon the people there. Later we read that this happens because
the people did not recognize that Jesus was from God. In
Luke 19:44 Jesus says, "They will not leave one stone on another,
because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”
Sometimes we think, “God, do you see my suffering? Where were you? Do
you care?” But Jesus wept over Jerusalem. He wept when Lazarus died. He
does care, and He cares very deeply. Jesus was moved to tears in this
passage and lamented what was to occur to the people. He didn’t cause
it; He wanted the people to receive Him. He did care. He cares.
